Dare to Believe by Dana Marie Bell

He'll fulfill her wildest fantasies... but only if she believes.

The Gray Court, Book 1

Leo Dunne has been searching his entire life for the one person born just for him. He finds her working in his own company, but the shy little Ruby Halloway constantly hides from him. He hatches a devilish plot with her best friend to bring her out of her shell, and the result proves her desire is more than a match for his own.

Ruby has had the hots for her boss for some time now, but she knows business and pleasure shouldn't mix. While that can't stop a girl from dreaming, she sticks by her guns and does her best never to be alone with the handsome CEO. Until the company masquerade party, where she discovers a passion with him that leaves a mark on her soul.

A family emergency calls Leo away, and rather than spend one night out of Ruby's arms, he convinces her to go with him. With his brother's life on the line, it's vital she learn how to deal with who, and what, her new lover really is...before it's too late.

Having met Ms. Bell at the RAW convention I fell in love with her amazing sense of humor. I had to find out if that translated to her writing. I am happy to report that indeed it does. I started with the first book in The Gray Court series Dare to Believe and I am hooked. Ms. Bell will be one of my auto buy authors for here on out.

Dare to Believe introduces us to the Dunne family as well as the world in which they live that includes the courts of the Fae as well as the politics involved in the courts. The world building is seamless with the story and flows naturally and enjoyably.

The love story between Leo and Ruby is fantastic and definitely steamy enough to get your motor going. With Leo being the hot alpha male we love and Ruby being smart but unsure of her own beauty they make a great couple and the humor and witty-ness of the author shine through in the dialog and situations that the couple and the family finds themselves in.

This is a complete story but it does leave the setup open for the coming books and if you are anything like me you will sit down and read the whole series end to end.

On a trip home to Belize Jesminda, Jes, meets an amazingly handsome stranger and has a hot wicked one night stand. To bad she doesn't understand the rules for one night stands and years later he still haunts her mind and dreams.

When Agent Draven Stone seduces a woman in the jungle his wolf wants to form a bond. He escapes as fast as if his tail was on fire. Now years later he still dreams about her and she is his next assignment.

I enjoyed the action in this book both the action and the sexual "action", The plot moved fast and a lot of information is throw at you really fast trying to build the world this series is set in. Some of the transitions from paragraph to paragraph lost me a little but it overall is a good set up for a series and a fun book to read.

We have all sorts of our beloved paranormal friends with this authors take on their abilities and limitations. We have a paranormal law enforcement group, black market vampire parts and steamy love scenes in between finding Jes ex-husband and stopping him from hurting her and her daughter.

About this author:
There is really not much to say... I love to write, read, and listen to music. My attempt at a music career sadly ended at the Apollo one warm night in May! LOL (Side note: I was not booed just outdone by two munchkins rapping to Biggy Smalls but they were good!)

Military brat extraordinaire; have traveled to a lot of interesting places.

The very first time I put pen to paper in story fashion, was in 6th grade. It was called The Case of the Missing Pepperoni.

It was a cute mystery where all the ingredients and shop appliances came to life when the store owner closed up for the evening.

It’s never too late for a second chance at love.

Keiran McDermott has lived by one simple rule for over a hundred years: keep a safe distance from humans at all times. He knows from experience that close proximity to them can lead to disasters and more often than not, end up badly. But when the need to explore a nearby town places him directly in the path of a woman being stalked by two foul predators, the instinct to protect the young beauty from the men intent on causing her harm forces him to break his self-imposed law.

However, once she’s safely away from her attackers, Keiran finds himself locked in another battle. He knows his weakness can kill: it did so in the past. But how can he find the courage to stay away, when the image of her lovely face torments his mind?

When a new threat forces him to come to Celine’s aid again, will Keiran be able to fight temptation long enough to keep her alive and protected, even from himself?

Warning: This title is intended for readers over the age of 18 as it contains adult sexual situations and/or adult language, and may be considered offensive to some readers.

Excerpt:

When Keiran had first entered the room, he’d maintained his distance to assure himself he could control the lure her blood had on him. He managed to suppress his hunger quite well until she stood right in front of him, her body so near it took a great deal of effort to stand there and not reach out and touch her. His desire to step closer to her nearly overwhelmed him. But as they prepared to leave, the dried blood on her work uniform called out to him, and the hunger immediately caused his stomach to clench and knot. His nostrils flared as the scent of her blood invaded his senses, and he had to breathe slowly to calm his raging vampire urges.

Even with her essence playing havoc on his senses, Keiran knew he could not hurt Celine. He could not let himself develop any feelings for this beautiful mortal. This up close he had been able to confirm that she resembled that person from his past. So much so that he had dare to hope it was her, but quickly realized it could not be. Though their facial features were in fact similar, this was an entirely different woman but God help him, he felt trapped. He knew he should not be here with her, but could not find the strength to leave. If he ever hurt her, he would will himself to hell. He’d find a way to destroy himself. He could not continue to exist with another innocent victim added to his conscience.

Feeling momentarily in control of the demon within, Keiran opened his eyes and looked down at the silent beauty waiting for him to either speak or move.

Celine stared up at him with a mixture of fear and concern. Her eyes were like a mirror: they did little to hide what she truly felt, and Keiran could not help but feel guilty over triggering anxiety within her.

With a substantial amount of effort, Keiran walked passed Celine and opened the door, holding it open for her as his eyes assessed her bloodied uniform. If he had to keep looking at it, they would never make it anywhere safely. It was bad enough he could smell it, but having it as a badge waving in front of him seemed like the worst form of torture. He realized what he needed to do in order to do in order to ensure at least some safe ground between them. Taking his jacket off, he immediately offered it to her.

“It’s to cover up the blood splattered on your clothing,” he motioned with a finger, indicating the stain on the upper left corner.

Celine looked down and back at him. Smiling shyly, she took the garment from his hands and smiled. “Ah… thank you. That’s very nice of you.” she added quickly. “I’m ready to go now,”

Keiran nodded once before stepping aside to allow her passage through the open door. He followed after her, keeping up with her short strides while maintaining a safe distance from her body, so they would not touch. Not because he did not want to, but because he feared how a simple gesture like that would affect him. God only knew how much he really wanted to run his hands up and down her body. But he did not know how far he could go without actually hurting her. So far, it had cost him a great deal of pain and concentration to keep his body and hunger under control. And if they made any type of physical contact, he was certain his control might snap.

Annie Nicholas gives us a sci-fi/paranormal romance in Scent of Salvation that has a brilliant scientist Susan Barlow not only invent a device that can move you through dimensions but has her using it as well.

Sorin is the alpha of his wolf shifter pack and he sees the beautiful Dr Barlow come out of a brilliant blue light and into his world, she must be sent from the goddess to help him and his pack.

In a world that is reminiscent of the early years of the United States Susan feels a bit out of her element she is a book worm and hasn't been that social or done much that was outdoorsy, now she has no choice. With a cast of characters that include a man whore shifter warrior, a shifter princess, an omega shifter that knows how to flirt, a scheming vampire, a couple of alpha females the give new definition to the word bitch, along with Susan from another dimension and Sorin who has taken over his pack from his brutal tyrant of a father the world and characters are interesting and clever.

I enjoyed the relationship built between Sorin and Susan as well as the set up of the characters of this world for hopefully more books to come.

Because of the dimensional travel and the sci-fi/paranormal realm this all takes place in Ms. Nicholas can get away with some pretty far fetched things in her story. Vampires who study blood and have the tools to do it among them. Still when you accept the sci-fi angle then it all works.

Thanks to Annie Nicholas for her insight to some of her inspiration.

I love to hike and enjoy the beauty of wilderness.

I DO NOT love encountering wild animals. Small things like squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits I’m fine with, but I’m talking about bears, wolves, and cats—the creatures that see me as take-out. I dread meeting one. I have met a black bear and a wolf on separate occasions. (Thank goodness I didn’t have my kids with me either time) The experience consisted of me trying to retreat as quickly and quietly as possible without drawing their attention.

When I first wrote this scene, some beta readers questioned my heroine’s reaction. Am I alone in my fear of sharp toothed and clawed creatures? I think not. Then again these beta readers are not city slickers like me and Susan. LOL

EXCERPT

Stars flashed in Susan’s vision. Air finally flowed into her chest, and she let out a groan. She felt more like she’d fallen than been blown to pieces.

Something cool and soft touched her cheek. She flinched and tried to sit up but only managed to roll onto her stomach. That didn’t help her nausea, and she struggled to keep breakfast down.

Fuck it. The blast hadn’t killed her so the military could clean her puke. Then they could haul her ass to jail—or the hospital.

Resting, she waited for Jeff’s yells for her arrest and execution, but the only sounds came from birdsongs. She jerked her face off the moist ground and grunted.

Birds? Had she blow the roof off the building?

Cool.

She rubbed her blurry eyes and blinked. Her heart did a double beat. She shook her head and blinked again.

Surrounded by lush green plants, Susan sat on a carpet of soft moss. She rose onto shaky, numb legs. A giant tree loomed thirty feet over her head. Three grown men touching fingertips might be able to hug the trunk.

There wasn’t a forest for miles, yet here she stood in the middle of one. She did a slow three-sixty. Tree, tree, bush, tree, building. Bingo.

Before her towered a stone structure overgrown with flowering vines. Taking one slow step at a time, she approached it. The steps were swept clean of any debris or growth. She climbed, listening for anything inside. Huge gaps in the walls let the sunlight in between the stone slabs, and deep, worn engravings covered them. She traced one with her fingertip and didn’t recognize the language. Hell, she couldn’t even read the symbol. Where was she?

Sucking in a sharp breath, she clapped her hands over her mouth.

DOUG had worked?

She was standing in another dimension.

Alive.

Her trip had been unintentional yet successful. She needed to high five someone. It had worked just like she’d said it would. All those people who’d laughed at her idea could shove it up their collective—

Twisting around with a foolish grin cramping her cheeks, she saw only rainforest. Shadows covered the ground since the trees’ canopy blocked most of the sunlight. Her grin faded and she broke into a cold sweat.

Oh shit, it had worked.

A vacuum of dread sucked the excitement from her body. The explosion must have punctured a hole through the dimensional veil and thrown her through. She couldn’t see the blue portal light. Without the machine, the gateway couldn’t remain open. Or ever open again since it should be slag with the rest of her lab. She shivered and pulled her coat tighter.

She was alone. Stranded God knows where.

For all she knew, T-rex lived over the next hill or worse, the Nazis had won World War II.

Taking a shuddering breath, she closed her eyes. She was a brilliant scientist, graduating at the top of all her classes. The unknown wasn’t something to fear but to be embraced and studied. However, field operations had never thrilled her. She was a lab geek with delusions of exploration. She’d always pictured herself guiding those brave souls who would step onto a new world from the safety of Technocon, not being that person. Glancing over her shoulder at the forest, she took a steadying breath.

What lived out there?

Birds sang, loud and uninterrupted by the hum of cars or machines. She couldn’t see any electrical lines or other buildings. Please, let there be some kind of path or road to follow. How long could she survive in the wilderness? Probably a couple days before something ate her.

The birds fell silent. She froze, facing the forest. Nothing moved. Her heart galloped as she searched the gloom. She backed into the building, not wanting to take her eyes off the woods. A crack in the floor caught her heel, and she stumbled while her arms pinwheeled until she caught her balance.

All right, she needed to get a grip. Just because things were quiet didn’t mean she should panic. Breaking her leg would be a death sentence. She kicked off her shoes. The logic was sound but the adrenaline coursing through her body told her to screw off and run. A cold sweat broke out over her skin, and a cool wind made her shiver.

She scanned the inside of the building. It didn’t have a roof. A stone altar in the center offered the only shelter. She hurried across to it and laid a hand over the smooth, cool surface. Breathing a sigh of relief, she closed her eyes for a heartbeat. It wasn’t bloodstained. That was a good sign, right?

She crept around to the other side and knelt behind it. Hiding felt right.

Crouched on the cold stone floor, she hugged her knees to her chest. At least the military hadn’t gotten her machine. A small consolation while squatting in another dimension, all alone like a frightened animal.

The rustle of leaves to her left made her squeak. She clapped her hand over her mouth and peeked around the corner. Something with silver-gray fur crawled under the vines through one of the wall’s many gaps.

Please let that be a big-ass raccoon. She watched as the creature’s dark, wet nose moved in her direction and sniffed. All her muscles seized. She couldn’t move or breathe.

The nose pushed through, followed by a large, wolf-like head. On his stomach, he crept into the building. Her vision tunneled as he rose to his hind legs and kept rising until he towered over her. Long claws protruded from his fingers and toes. Swinging his head, he sniffed the air. Three jagged scars ran over his muzzle. His amber gaze met her stare, and he bared his sharp teeth. As he moved, thick, solid muscles slid under his silver fur.

With a knocking heart, Susan was anchored to the spot. A werewolf. A real, honest-to-God werewolf stood not five feet from her. She hadn’t crossed dimensions. She’d died and gone to hell.

As he stepped toward her, something flipped off in her brain and it stopped functioning. Deductive reasoning vanished like a cheap parlor trick. Sixty thousand years of human instinct buried in her genes kicked in, and Susan scuttled away from the beast until her head hit the stone wall. Ignoring the sharp pain, she grabbed the vines and pulled herself to her feet. All the while she couldn’t stop staring at this magnificent creature made of nightmares. She took a deep breath and let out a scream that rattled her tonsils.

 photo Review.jpg

Unholy Alliance, book 6, is the final chapter in the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles. As with all of the books Unholy Alliance is a mix of suspense, romance, and hot steamy sex. As with book 3 this book has a lot more action than romance with a clash between the original vampires over the fate of the human race.

We have a lot more vampires in this book and less shifters, we meet Kysen's maker as well as other founts(the original 7 vampires are known as founts). Natasha's life is in great danger and Darian and Xaver what ever they have to in order to save her and in the processes help the human race.

Unholy Alliance takes up at the moment the cliffhanger at the end of book 5, The Lion's Den, stops off. It is a roller coaster ride of meetings with more and more powerful beings looking for a way to save Natashia. With the occasional homage being required we also get some heavy duty vampire on vampire action going on.

Ms. Simmons wraps up the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles with a bang and a whole new world. The entire series has been a fantastic read and I have enjoyed the opportunity to review each book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I was born in the little, but big bustling city of Chicago, Illinois. I still live there today and I’m loving every second of it ... Except for those harsh cold winters. I started writing short horror stories when I was eleven years old. It wasn't until 2004 that I decided to take the plunge into the professional literary world when I wrote Desires Unleashed.

I love the supernatural world; I've always found it fascinating, especially vampires and shape-shifters. It was my love of the genre that motivated me to create the story I had always wanted to read. I published it, hoping there were other people out there who would be entertained by that same story. I love to entertain people, to offer them that fantasy world they can escape into filled with wonders and good times. I know I appreciate the escapism I've delved into when reading a good book.

Some of the accolades I've won for my writing are: "New Voice of Today" by A Romance Review, "Rising Star" by Love Romance and "Author of the Month" by Warrior of Words. I've been nominated two years in a row in several categories, including "best vampire novel" and "best urban-fantasy" at Love Romance and More. My third novel; The Royal Flush did win honorable mention in 2006.

 photo Review.jpg

The Lions Den, book 5 in the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles, takes place about two years after the end of Hostile Territory, book 4. Relationships have changed and matured over this time and the crimes on the supernatural front have been pretty quiet, that however changes in a big way. We do get to know more of the characters that were introduced in Hostile Territory, book 4, I found they were brought right into the group that makes up the heroes and heroines of the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles books.

I have give a little *SPOILER ALERT* at this point to explain why this book to me got a 3 1/2 flower rating while the others to date have rated much higher. This book has as a large part of the antagonist plot the murder and sexual abuse of children. I have a really hard time with this if the rest of the writing and the story had not been as well done as it was I would have had to rate it even lower. The murder and abuse are never trivialised and the hero/heroine characters are sufficiently horrified however as I said this made the book far less enjoyable to me.

I did love the way that past and new relationships have developed and I love to read about the way that our arrogant master vampire takes care of a baby. This book did have funny moments and tender loving moments as well as the sexy steamy moments that we have come to love from the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles series.
