When Keiran had first entered the room, he’d maintained his distance to assure himself he could control the lure her blood had on him. He managed to suppress his hunger quite well until she stood right in front of him, her body so near it took a great deal of effort to stand there and not reach out and touch her. His desire to step closer to her nearly overwhelmed him. But as they prepared to leave, the dried blood on her work uniform called out to him, and the hunger immediately caused his stomach to clench and knot. His nostrils flared as the scent of her blood invaded his senses, and he had to breathe slowly to calm his raging vampire urges.

Even with her essence playing havoc on his senses, Keiran knew he could not hurt Celine. He could not let himself develop any feelings for this beautiful mortal. This up close he had been able to confirm that she resembled that person from his past. So much so that he had dare to hope it was her, but quickly realized it could not be. Though their facial features were in fact similar, this was an entirely different woman but God help him, he felt trapped. He knew he should not be here with her, but could not find the strength to leave. If he ever hurt her, he would will himself to hell. He’d find a way to destroy himself. He could not continue to exist with another innocent victim added to his conscience.

Feeling momentarily in control of the demon within, Keiran opened his eyes and looked down at the silent beauty waiting for him to either speak or move.

Celine stared up at him with a mixture of fear and concern. Her eyes were like a mirror: they did little to hide what she truly felt, and Keiran could not help but feel guilty over triggering anxiety within her.

With a substantial amount of effort, Keiran walked passed Celine and opened the door, holding it open for her as his eyes assessed her bloodied uniform. If he had to keep looking at it, they would never make it anywhere safely. It was bad enough he could smell it, but having it as a badge waving in front of him seemed like the worst form of torture. He realized what he needed to do in order to do in order to ensure at least some safe ground between them. Taking his jacket off, he immediately offered it to her.

“It’s to cover up the blood splattered on your clothing,” he motioned with a finger, indicating the stain on the upper left corner.

Celine looked down and back at him. Smiling shyly, she took the garment from his hands and smiled. “Ah… thank you. That’s very nice of you.” she added quickly. “I’m ready to go now,”

Keiran nodded once before stepping aside to allow her passage through the open door. He followed after her, keeping up with her short strides while maintaining a safe distance from her body, so they would not touch. Not because he did not want to, but because he feared how a simple gesture like that would affect him. God only knew how much he really wanted to run his hands up and down her body. But he did not know how far he could go without actually hurting her. So far, it had cost him a great deal of pain and concentration to keep his body and hunger under control. And if they made any type of physical contact, he was certain his control might snap.

YUM! Baked Hedgehog!!

Yep! You read that right…baked hedgehog! What is that, you may ask? That unusual little dish is the most interesting tidbit of information I learned during my research into the Gypsies.

I chose to add Gypsies to Midnight Conquest, Book 1 of my Bonded By Blood Vampire Chronicles , partly because the Gypsies are so accepting of the supernatural and traditionally connected to vampires, werewolves and the paranormal in general. But I also chose them because they’re a part of my family heritage. I was told by my paternal grandmother that her side of the family was descended from Romany Gypsies (she called them “Romanian Gypsies”) who eventually joined the circus. Apparently, my great-great grandmother stood on the back of two horses, riding them around the ring and performed for King George V and Queen Mary. And when she wasn’t riding horses on her bare feet, she was telling fortunes by reading cards.

During my research, though, I delved into the cuisine of the Gypsies to bring a taste of authenticity to the historical setting. Turns out hedgehog, being a fairly common rodent in the UK and Europe, was a delicacy for the traveling Romany tribes. The animal is trapped and then encased in a ball of clay (dead, of course), then set directly onto a campfire where it is baked. When the clay ball is broken open, the meat is extracted and the tiny sharp needles on its back are embedded in the clay, so there’s no worries of eating the porcupine-like spines.

Here’s a small excerpt of Midnight Conquest where my heroine, Davina, is walking through the Gypsy camp with her mother, Lilias, and experiences this unique dish:
As Davina and Lilias continued through the maze of activity, a man kicked a melon-sized ball of clay out of the fire beside his caravan, which rolled into their path, startling them. He approached with apologies and picked up the hot ball with a cloth, bringing it back to his seat. Davina veered toward him as he broke the clay ball open with a rock. Taking his knife from the ground beside him, he cut into the ball, revealing a steamy, white center. Davina stepped further toward him, peering at his ministrations. “What do you have there, sir?” she inquired.
“Baked hedgehog,” he replied, offering a piece of meat at the end of his dagger. “Would you like to try some, milady?”
Lilias wrinkled her nose. “Oh nay, Davina!” She grabbed Davina’s outstretched hand and gawked at the Gypsy as if he were mad. “Thank you, but nay!”
Davina laughed at her mother’s reluctance. “Come, M’ma. Be bold!” Davina took the offered meat and blew on the flesh to ease the heat. She sniffed and her mouth watered. “Oh, this smells divine!” Placing the morsel in her mouth, she explored the new taste with slow and deliberate chewing, savoring the succulent flavor. “Almost like rabbit.”
Her mother still shook her head and even clamped her lips tight to get her message across. She pulled Davina away as Davina thanked the man for the sample.
If you’re cringing like Lilias, you’re not alone! The tradition of eating baked hedgehog is still upheld by the Romany Gypsies and an article in a British publication – The Independent – shows how this practice is most definitely frowned upon!

Throwing his cloak back over his shoulders, he revealed a broad chest that rippled under the thin material of his black shirt as he reached across his hip for his sword.

Cailin blanched. Not many men carried swords on their person in the port city of Leith—daggers were the weapon of choice and easier to conceal—and those that did rarely matched the craftsmanship of this blade. This was not a cheap, decorative sword. Out of one mess and into another. She swallowed her fear and stood her ground.

“I suggest a wager.” He winked.

“I am not a gambling woman.”

Tilting his head back, he laughed and Cailin clenched her jaw, her cheeks blooming with heat again. Amusement twinkling in his eyes, he ignored her comment. “A challenge. If you win, I shall let you walk free.”

“And if you win?”

The amusement in his eyes transformed into smoldering desire. “I shall have to take you in hand and see you submit…” His eyes raked her body. “To the proper authority.” He folded his arms in front of him, the blade of his sword sweeping up and standing erect from his fist.

Cailin’s breath left her in a rush and fire surged through her body—from the fluttering in her stomach to the tingling in her toes. She did not miss his twofold meaning, and drew a deep, steadying breath, biting her tongue; though keeping her tongue proved more difficult to manage. “We shall see about this, sir.”

Henrik’s back slammed against a brick wall, the darkness of the narrow alley sheltering their trio from the tourists thronging Tromsø’s streets.

Lars stood at the entrance, making sure no one developed an unhealthy curiosity.

Jakob got right up in Henrik’s face, forearm pressing into the king’s chest. “What happened?”

He shook his head, swallowing thickly, his hunger burning so intensely it was almost a living thing within him. “Wanted her,” he rasped. It hadn’t been a decision. Tina Donahue consistently gives us some of the steamiest sex while writing a well crafted story. Deep Within Me is the second in The Prophecy series and I would recommend reading book one Come Fill Me first, Ms. Donahue does an excellent job at providing information from the first book to make it possible to read Deep Within Me as a stand alone but you will have a fuller experience by reading them in order.

Zeke Neekoma is the leader of his clan and has visions as his gift, up until recently he has only seen visions related directly to himself and his enemies not he is also seeing vision of things that could happen to those he loves.
Liz once from the enemy clan is now the love of Zeke's life and seeing visions of her dying are tearing him apart, Zeke is also having to deal with his brother Jacob whom he has shared Liz with but now Zeke wants her to himself. The leader of the enemy clan is out to kidnap Liz and her father as well as Zeke to exploit their gifts, this makes for some very suspenseful moments in the story.

Deep Within Me is loaded with sex from beginning to end, the action in the book seems to take place in between sex scenes and they are smokin' hot. I found this to be a mixture of a paranormal, thriller, erotic romance while resolving this story for the most part the end of the book leaves you hungry for the next in this series.

Your past books have been about mythological Gods, this latest is about shifters. Will we be getting more Gods in the future? What about more shifters perhaps a giraffe shifter?

LOL- no, no giraffe shifters, although I have toyed with the idea of an evil possum shifter...we shall see which way the wind blows. ;) I do love my Greek gods and definitely plan to return to that series as well. Some of my readers want a Hades book and an Artemis book. I think I'd do Artemis next because I just love her and she needs some good lovin.'


Do you have a favorite myth or God?

Apollo has always been my fave, which was why I had to write Sunburn about him. I love his blond hair and pointy golden arrows (ahem) and his big muscles. I also love that he had such a tortured love history. He had a very sordid past, which I tried to use in my book as well.


What is the hardest part of the writing process for you? Do you have a favorite part or a part you dread?

Nothing is dreadful for me when it comes to writing. Even edits and rewrites are processes which I embrace because I always learn something. My Liquid Silver editors have been so smart and such a guidance to me. As far as the hard parts, well, when you've read the same manuscript 50 times during edits, you do begin to get fuzzy vision. It's hard to pick out errors at that point.


Being Canadian do you find that you have sayings or slang that you have to “standardize” so those of us in the US aren’t wondering what you are talking about eh?

LOL. Well you got the big one. "Eh" is very important and most of my sentences are colored by this delightful little term. Luckily our lingo is pretty much the same with a few exceptions. The big Canadian thing all Americans should know is our Tim Horton's coffee. It's our big coffee chain and is spreading into the northern part of the States now. Drink it, my friends, and drink hearty. I suggest a "double double"- two creams, two sugars- the perfect Canadian beverage!

If you were stranded on a desert isle and you had one hot celebrity and an unlimited supply of Nutella which celeb would it be?

Carin, you know me so well. ;) Hmm...Nutella...and two men. Richard Armitage, my fave Brit actor, and Joel Edgerton, my fave Aussie actor. I'm a greedy girl. Hope those boys are taking vitamins for stamina.

Taking a step away from her usual mythological gods Rosanna Leo's newest book Predator's Kiss is about brothers who are bear shifters and a very frightened erotic romance writer who is being stalked.

With the unique idea of a vacation lodge and private island for shifters, Predator's Kiss is funny, sexy and even suspenseful. Ms Leo has a way of painted pictures with her stories so that you can imagine the wild things in her books actually happening. I fell in love with the grumpy grizzly shifter, who is also the hero of Predator's Kiss, Ryland. His younger brother Soren is a pain as little brothers usually are but the love between the siblings comes through, and Lia (who you have to wonder if Rosanna didn't write a little like someone she knows) is a erotic romance writer and ends up on Gemini Island while trying to escape a stalking fan.

The bk is steamy in all the best ways and we also learn little tidbits about the mating habits of bears :O) Ry is strong, demanding, tender and protective. Lia can take whatever he can give her and more.

I understand that the next book in the series will feature Soren the polar bear shifter brother or Ryland. I will be looking to add that to my library as soon as it is available.
