NetGalley Review: Training Their Mate (Pack Wars #1) by Vella Day

Liz Wharton has one goal—to kill the man who raped her mother. Had she known Harvey Couch was a werewolf, she never would have tried to take him on by herself.

Determined to put an end to the pest bent on revenge, Harvey sends his goons after her. When two wolves attack her, Liz is sure she’s hallucinating. Good thing Trax Field is there to stop them.

Trax and Dante Field, members of the Pack, have devoted their lives to stopping bad shifters like Harvey Couch. Saving Liz would have been just an ordinary day, but when Trax finds her huddled in an alley, bruised and shaken, he’s convinced she’s his mate.

To keep her safe, Trax and Dante hold her captive in their loft apartment. When they aren’t searching for Couch, Trax and his brother spend the night training their future mate in the art of bondage and sensual pleasures. How will they be able to convert her into embracing not only their lifestyle but also their animalistic side?

 photo Review.jpg

Training Their Mate is an erotic paranormal BDSM shifter novel, I think the erotic and the shifter aspects of the book overshadow most anything else however this book is about more than just a couple of brothers finding their mate.

Trax and Dante work with The Pack to help eliminate bad shifters(Colters) and to help keep the fact that werewolves exist quiet. While working on his latest case Trax has the chance to rescue Liz, soon finding that she is his mate along with his brother Dante. While keeping her safe at their house they are involved in some hot and heavy getting to know you sex. Now they just have to catch Harvey Couch before he hurts Liz or the human authorities get involved.

I found this to be an entertaining story with some pretty hot scenes that had moments with Liz & Traz, Liz & Dante and Liz & both brothers (no the brothers had no contact that would just be gross) It is a rather short book at less than 200 pages and so things move along very quickly this is attributed to wolves knowing their mate. We do have the action of trying to catch Couch and his trying to hurt Liz but that is almost more background filler to the sex. We have some pretty light BDSM, a little spanking a little bondage and double teaming with Liz and the brothers so if that is over the top for you now you know.

This should be a fun series of quick reads that give you your erotic and paranormal fix at the same time.

ARC review: Lick (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott

Lick Release Date July 1st (Yes Monday the day after tomorrow)

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favourite son is sure to be a wild ride.

 photo Review.jpg

Lick the first book in the rockin' new series Stage Dive by Kylie Scott, will release Monday July 1st (just in case you missed that little gem from the top of the post lol). With a younger (20 somethings) perspective on a hot and deeply touching love affair and a hero that is a rock and roll star Lick is a perfect fit for the new "New Adult" category that is being promoted.

Evelyn our heroine wakes up married to the most amazing looking man she has ever seen David, she promptly throws up on him. Not a scene you will find in your standard romance novel but then again Kylie Scott doesn't write the standard romance novel she kicks the standard to a new level and writes the amazing romance novel. Ms. Scott has the ability to take an unusual or even outlandish situation and use it to turn out some of the best writing of contemporary romance around.

Lick is part Cinderella tale part second chances and Ms. Scott is able to still make it 100% hers with no cheesy, easy fix but with the power of true love and real gut wrenching moments where the truth is told and dealt with. (sorry no spoilers here) I know I am years past the twenty something "target" group for the New Adult books that are out however I would say that labels mean very little when the story is this good.

The only thing I could find in any way that people may find distracting(and mine is an ARC copy so this might have been changed in the final edits) is Ms. Scott is an Australian and the book is set in Las Vegas and Portland so the characters are American and now and then an Australian term for things would slip in, now I don't have a problem with this at all I change the word in my head automatically. Since I read books by Canadian, English and Australian authors if it says lift in my head I read elevator, if it says colour I read color. Again this may have been changed and even if it wasn't not something that I find as a distraction however some may.

I am waiting with baited breath for the next book in this series to be out and this one doesn't come out until Monday, Write Kylie WRITE LOL :O)

Excerpt Kylie shared on FB:
“Baby—”
“Don’t you dare call me that,” I yelled.
“I’m sorry.” His gaze roamed my face, searching for sense maybe.
He was shit out of luck. “I’m sorry.”
“Stop.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Over and over he said, chanting the most
worthless words in all of time and space. I had to stop it. Shut him up before he drove me insane. I smashed my mouth to his, halting the useless litany. He groaned and kissed me back hard, bruising my lips, hurting me. But then I hurt him too. The pain helped. I pushed my tongue into his mouth, taking what was supposed to be mine. In that moment I hated him and I loved him. There didn’t seem to be any difference.
My hands were freed and I wound them around his neck. He turned us, setting my back to the rough brick wall. His touch burned through my skin and bones. It all happened so fast, there wasn’t time to wonder about the wisdom of it. He pushed up my dress and tore at my panties. They didn’t stand a chance. The cool of the night air and the heat of his palms smoothed over my thighs.

MINI BOOK BLAST: Vampire Elite by Irina Argo‏

Can the ultimate choice be made if saving your race means destroying the one you love?
At the beginning of the twenty-first century of our era a millennia long war between two immortal races was coming to an end. The Vampire Elite, the strongest among vampires, forced the race of immortal beings, the Amiti to become their blood suppliers, called bloodstock, locking them in their underground cells and treating them like livestock. The surviving free Amiti make a final attempt to strike back. The Queen of Amiti is proclaimed a traitor and is executed. Her death signifies the rise of a new Queen, her young daughter Arianna who becomes the last hope of her dying race. Arianna totally embraces her mission and is ready to fight for her people to the last drop of her blood but encounters an unexpected challenge—the vampire King Tor. They both are captured into a trap of love where they had to make an ultimate choice; to kill the loved one or to let their races die.
Vampire Elite is the epic story of a bitter conflict between two peoples, and the effect of that conflict on everyone living in its grip. The characters are driven to love and betrayal, vengeance and sacrifice in a world without easy black-and-white answers.
Based on an ancient Egyptian legend, packed with action and intrigue, Vampire Elite will pull you into the entrancing world of immortals and open new portals into their hidden universe.

Excerpt:(Simone and Oberon)

She loved tormenting him, making him tremble with anticipation, his breath hitching in his throat. She knew it turned him on, and she’d also discovered that his blood tasted even better than usual when he was aroused.

“Now go to the wall and spread your arms. Make it easy for me to punish you,” she commanded.

Oberon obeyed, leaning against the wall and placing his wrists into the metal cuffs embedded in the wall. Simone locked the cuffs and left him like that.

A moment later, she returned looking like Catwoman in a black latex bodysuit, her hair pulled into a high, thick ponytail. She’d accessorized with thick studded cuffs at her wrists, a braided whip at her waist and a dagger in her hand.

Walking slowly and deliberately toward Oberon, she sliced through all his clothing, removing it and his weaponry piece by piece. Dropping the dagger she tilted her head to appreciate the sight of him: completely naked, vulnerable, and helpless—and hard for her, of course. Good.

She showed him her fangs then lowered her mouth to his jugular and bit into the skin lightly, releasing only a few drops of blood. She lowered her head to his chest, tracing the muscles there with her tongue, and then, using her fangs as daggers, she pierced his skin in unexpected places: his chest, shoulders, biceps, abs, hips. The blood oozed from the cuts, and soon Oberon’s body was covered with crimson streaks that formed random, vivid patterns across the golden skin of his torso and legs.

“You look incredibly sexy,” Simone heard herself saying as she shifted into an altered state, seeing nothing but this tantalizing male body bleeding for her.

 photo Review.jpg

Hostile Territory is book four in the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles and while it tells a complete story in the novel it would be best enjoyed as part of the series.

Ms. Simmons takes us once again into the strange alliance made of a vampire nest, a wolf shifter pack and a leopard shifter pride, the groups have formed friendships and a few relationships and they stand together against this latest threat to them all. As in all the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles the action swings from suspenseful to sexual with couples of all orientations and even shifter/vampire, shifter/human and vampire/human relationships.

I found Hostile Territory to be heavier on the action than the erotic side of the story, with things coming to a head with a rival group after the Chicago area territory. As always we are treated to the quirky humor and the unseen plot twists that keep us coming back for more.

This story draws on things that happened in the first book all the way up to introducing more new characters. We see the depth of love the characters have in their relationships as they put themselves on the line or in situations they aren't comfortable with in order to save those they love.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I was born in the little, but big bustling city of Chicago, Illinois. I still live there today and I’m loving every second of it ... Except for those harsh cold winters. I started writing short horror stories when I was eleven years old. It wasn't until 2004 that I decided to take the plunge into the professional literary world when I wrote Desires Unleashed.

I love the supernatural world; I've always found it fascinating, especially vampires and shape-shifters. It was my love of the genre that motivated me to create the story I had always wanted to read. I published it, hoping there were other people out there who would be entertained by that same story. I love to entertain people, to offer them that fantasy world they can escape into filled with wonders and good times. I know I appreciate the escapism I've delved into when reading a good book.

Some of the accolades I've won for my writing are: "New Voice of Today" by A Romance Review, "Rising Star" by Love Romance and "Author of the Month" by Warrior of Words. I've been nominated two years in a row in several categories, including "best vampire novel" and "best urban-fantasy" at Love Romance and More. My third novel; The Royal Flush did win honorable mention in 2006.

Excerpt:

Marion Kruse was one of several characters who crept out of the shadows of my mind and
essentially said, "My story also needs telling." Here is just a bit of Marion's part in WEATHER
WITCH, taken from Chapter Nine.

The young man no longer stuck to the shadows, no longer waited until nightfall to work his
magick--or mischief as those Grounded would claim. He was tall and broad of shoulder with
dark hair and gray eyes and a coolness about him that made people think of first frosts and
snowfalls. And with good reason.
Because Marion Kruse was a cold-hearted young man.
Truth be told, He wanted nothing more than to return to a simpler time. A time he didn't wander
the roads and towns doing small things to amuse himself and set others to wondering. He wanted
nothing more to be back at his mother's feet, reading books about pirates and scoundrels that
made her laugh and tell him and his brother to never grow up to be wicked--that goodness was its
own reward.
He wanted nothing more than to grow fat on Chloe's generously proportioned biscuits and call
her "nanny" again. Nothing more than to go fox hunting with his father and friends (even that
frustrating pretty boy Rowen Burchette) and dance with an attractive girl.
He wanted nothing more than to go back to before he'd been Made.
But Marion had been taught that going back was nigh unto impossible.

 photo Review.jpg

The Blood Bride is the start to a new series and it should be an interesting series. With secrets all over the place it is amazing that anyone kept up with the truth. our hero is Xavier, a 400 year old master to a vampire nest, and out heroine is Hope who has just returned to the nest after getting her degree in school.

I found this story started out a bit confusing however it did get better as the story progresses. I would be easy to feel sorry for Hope but then she turns around and shows her backbone and why she is the heroine of the novel.

Old secrets thought long dead return, feelings thought impossible to allow happen and the result is an erotic paranormal romance that I was willing to stay up late to read. Ms. Nix does a good job at explaining the crowds and the background of the story and the characters.

We do have several hot scenes and they can be a little descriptive as well as being written so that passion shows through and not just sex for the sake of sex.

Hope hauled the last heavy box up the stairs of the manor house, occasionally catching glimpses of the way her midnight black hair shone in the sunlight, when she passed the window in the living room of her apartment. "Thank heavens this is the last one," she muttered to herself, sliding the box down to rest on the floor, before straightening and rubbing the nagging ache in her back. She could have had help, all she needed to do was ask, but now that she was an adult she needed to stand on her own two feet, she reminded herself.

Straightening up, she looked around at the mass of boxes waiting for her to delve into. "Well, gone away and back again. Where do I start first?"

The phone trilled and she started for an instant, before extending her hand to the receiver on the shelf beside her. "Hope."

"Miss Hope, do you require any help? Lisi is wondering if you require her assistance." The muffled voice of one of her guardians flowed out of the earpiece. She had forgotten that living at the manor meant the goldfish bowl lifestyle she had tried her best to escape at college. Not that she’d had much opportunity to live a free lifestyle. She’d been lodged with a guardian family within the college grounds. Even then, her personal team of five guards had shadowed her every move—to classes, shopping and even to the hairdresser’s.

They hadn’t escaped her notice, the looks some of her classmates had thrown her way. Longing for the lifestyle they’d thought she enjoyed. Little did they know, Hope would happily have swapped, a lot of the time. Downtime had existed within a carefully vetted group of companions, each from houses of similar status. The cloying atmosphere she hated, but, nonetheless, she had submitted to her parents’ will. Only a few times had she sought to do activities that they would have deemed inappropriate, but her conscience had always kicked in, and she had derived no enjoyment from the guilty feelings that had overcome her.

"No thanks, Jeffrey. I have all the boxes up here and I am going to take my time going through everything." How could she explain that she needed a freedom that had been denied? That this small and almost insignificant rebellion was one she embraced? But she couldn’t. It wasn’t fair to Jeffrey to share that.

"Fine, Miss Hope. Oh, and I am supposed to remind you, the new Master has requested your presence in his library after sundown."

She nodded, knowing it was expected that she would take her oath of fealty. "Oh. Right. I’ll be down for sunset." She laid down the receiver. It’s one thing to owe your continued safety to a vampire nest Master, but quite another to be at his beck and call all the time, just as her parents had been. Her temper spiked momentarily. The emotion coiled through her then she shuddered, pushing away the negative thought, while absently reaching for the boxes she needed to stack, store or unpack. The rough exterior of some of them brushed against her hands. For now, she had time. Lots of time.

Ripping the tape off the first box, she then started to root through it, unwrapping reminders of her slightly more free college life, formulating arguments to put to her parents, knowing that the dice were stacked against her. Her life had been mapped out since her birth, but perhaps she could find a way around some of the roadblocks. At least she hoped so. With that thought, she set to work.

* * * *

He stretched in the bed, feeling the cool sheets around his body, savouring the experience of knowing he could rise when he wanted to. Luxuriating as he came to full awareness of his surroundings. His bed. His home. His nest. A feeling of exultation swept through him. One he had experienced several times in the last six months since he had become Master.

Xavier had only recently been transferred to this nest, after Cyrus had been called to ascend to a seat on the Council with his predecessor Cressida, the most senior of the vampires on the Council.

A new Master had been required for the nest, a situation arising from the ascension of Cressida who had saved the child Hope from the rogues. The death of another of the Council meant that Cyrus had answered a call to accept a seat. It was an almost unheard of event for a nest to have two new Masters in under a hundred years, but Xavier had accepted his unexpected promotion. Not that he would take it for granted—no, he worked beside his vampires as required, so they knew he would ensure their safety while they ensured his.

The household he had taken over was well run, and he had no fears for the financial status, even though they had lost the manor and many assets during the dark days of clearing the rogues who had attacked the house. Indeed, he had been with Cyrus the night he had ascended and had seen the great strides Cyrus had made during his Mastership.

He swiped a hand over his stubbled face and a voice to his left said quietly, "Master, refreshments for you." A crystal goblet appeared in a white hand at the edge of his vision. He accepted it with a grunt, the ruby red liquid inside calling to him on a primal level. Blood wine. Sustenance that would ease the clawing hunger he always felt on awakening.

His teeth extended and his mouth opened. The first drop touched his tongue and a frisson moved through him, the ecstasy of drinking flowing into his body. He took his time, savouring the flavours.

Young.

Full bodied.

Tart aftertaste. The wine, the only human sustenance he could now enjoy. Food was relegated to a memory of things long past.

He closed his eyes as the last drop flowed, and breathed deep. Yes, a Master could very quickly become accustomed to this lifestyle, but not now and not today. He needed to meet this Hope, the one who had turned their entire world upside down. James had told him little about his daughter, save that she would need to remain within the house, protected from the world. That someday she would assume the mantle of leading the house from within, while her brother oversaw the legal and financial affairs of the nest.

He pushed the bed covers away, unconcerned about nudity as he padded to the bathroom. He might be a vampire, but he still bathed and shaved, a thought that made him chuckle. Even after all these years, when vampires had made their entry into the human world, humans outside nests thought vampires had no need for those daily rituals.

He moved through his ablutions. She would be waiting for him, but he would present himself to her in his most urbane incarnation. She would take her oath of fealty, then he would meet with his advisers, James and David leading the human contingent.
