Escape to My Arms‏ by Heather Thurmeier

What if The End is just the beginning?

Sara’s been preparing for this moment her whole life—she just never believed it would actually happen. With her bug-out bag and emergency food already in her truck, her only goal is to get to her family’s hidden bunker and wait out the pandemic that’s hit every major cruise ship port in the US. But her plan quickly falls apart. She’s out of gas, her route to the bunker is now a two-lane parking lot with no alternative in sight, and her only weapon is a pocketknife. For an experienced prepper, she’s made every rookie mistake.

Dane believes he’s safe in his cabin, off the beaten path and in the woods with his own source for water, electricity and an endless supply of food to hunt. After finding Sara stranded and alone, he’s suddenly not only providing for and protecting himself, but also the girl who wandered out of the woods and into his life. When looters come looking to take what he has, Sara and Dane’s only option is to make a run for their last hope—the bunker.

Can Sara and Dane find safety in each other’s arms and will they survive long enough to escape to a future together?

 photo Review.jpg

When an unknown virus starts to spread inward across the country from cruise ships pandemonium breaks out, good thing Sara Miller and her family were prepared in case something like this ever happened. To bad Sara forgot to fill her gas tank.

Dane Tyson has an isolated cabin that he feels safe in he has a small stockpile of weapons, canned goods and he can hunt for his meat. When he finds an SUV in the middle of his woods he is surprised to find the beautiful Sara hiding in the back. When she hurts her knee and has to stay with him for a couple of days the sexual tension rises.

I love the preppers tv shows and so a prepper romance like Escape to My Arms is right up my alley. I love that mixed into the love story and the post-apocalyptic world you can read some of the things that Dane and Sara have done to prepare for a break down of society. Dane and Sara have sexual attraction in spades but Sara has made a promise to her family never to reveal the preparations they have made for just such an occasion.

With Sara being a part of a prepper family and this the story of her journey to safety I am hopeful that we will get future stories of the rest of the family or maybe others like them. I enjoyed Escape to My Arms a great deal.

My Big Fat Zombie Giveaway featuring Flesh (Flesh #1) and Skin (Flesh #2) by Kylie Scott

Ali has been hiding in an attic since civilisation collapsed eight weeks ago.

When the plague hit, her neighbours turned into mindless, hungry, homicidal maniacs.

Daniel has been a loner his entire life. Then the world empties and he realises that being alone isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Finn is a former cop who is desperate for companionship, and willing to do anything it takes to protect the survivors around him.

When the three cross paths they band together; sparks fly, romance blooms in the wasteland and Ali, Daniel and Finn bend to their very human needs in the ruins of civilisation.

Lust, love and trust all come under fire in Flesh as the three band together to survive, hunted through the suburban wastelands.

NOTE: This story is rated "Hot" and contains M/F/M and F/M pairings

Six months since the zombie plague struck, former librarian Roslyn Stewart has been holed up in a school with eight other survivors. But now the shelves in the school canteen are bare. The stranger at the gate has supplies that will ensure the group’s ongoing survival, but at a cost. He wants a woman.

Nick is a man with a plan. He’ll treat Roslyn like a Queen, devoting the rest of his life to protecting and providing for her. In exchange, of course, for sexual favours. It’s the deal of the century given the state of the world. But Roslyn doesn’t see it that way. The first chance she gets she attacks the ex-army man and attempts to escape, forcing Nick to contain her. And so begins his awkward courtship of the woman, with her chained to the bed for security reasons.

Chained like a dog and forced to spend her every waking moment with a creep, albeit a good looking one, Ros is determined to escape. When circumstances force them to band together against a common enemy their very survival depends on their ability to learn to trust each other. An uneasy partnership develops, but can a relationship with such a difficult beginning ever have a future?

 photo Review.jpg

I must start by saying that these two books are by far the best zombie books I have read and the fact that they have an erotic element to them just makes them that much better. They are hotter than the outback in December.
Kylie Scott has created a unique dystopian world where a zombie plague has been unleashed and there only pockets of survivors, These stories take place in Australia and follow some of the survivors as they battle not only the zombies but also the distrust of others that comes from the isolation and the looting and lawlessness that occurs soon after the plague starts to sweep the world.

Flesh:
Not only do we get a suspenseful roller coaster of a story being chased by looters and rapists, we also get the amazing m/f/m menage that develops between Ali, Finn and Daniel. These are people who before the Zombie Apocalypse didn't know each other and had never considered being involved in a menage relationship. Now with women scarce and Ali falling for both Daniel and Finn its the most logical thing to do. That doesn't mean that jealousy just goes away or that they don't have to work for it.

Skin: second book is best read after the first for continuity.
When food and essentials get scarce at the school Roslyn is holed up in with 8 others they must decide who will be kicked out and given to the stranger that appears and wants one of the women. Seeing as how Roslyn wont put out for the slimy fellow teacher she manages to get traded for a truck full of supplies.

Nick has everything planned out, he has a place to live and supplies to live on. He just has to convince Roslyn she got the best of the deal at the school because she is feeling a lot like she was bought and sold.
Skin follows Flesh in the timeline since the plague started and follows secondary characters from Flesh.

I loved that this was as much a love story as an erotic story as it was an adventure/suspense story. The characters are amazingly well done and easy to love. The world created here is so believable that you will want to check the news for spread of the zombie virus.
Both books deserve the 5 flower rating.

 photo Review.jpg

In the future dystopian world, built by Ashlynn Monroe for Given, women have been mostly wiped out from a mystery illness and since they are in such limited supply the government houses and protects them until they are 21 when they are the "prise" in a lottery and given to six men.

This is not your typical menage story, the men are friends but still territorial and jelious of each other. Krista our heroine has a favorite and everything so it doesn't play out where they all end up a big happy family.

I felt that a lot of the book went into telling the story of the plague, government interference and Christa's "choice" to not try to escape being given, I wish at least some of that time had been more devoted to the men in the story. We find out superficial information for the most part about most of them and I would have loved to read more of their back story as well, I would also like to see future books telling the story of the men.

Lots of sex, some of it kinky but that is to be expected when you give a woman to six men who have never had one. Best of all there is a HEA.

Excerpt
They left her alone. She sat down on the bed and air whooshed from her lungs as she sat in a state of nervous anticipation. Oh God, who should I pick? She couldn’t help wondering. Choosing felt so very wrong to her. She may belong to these men for a long time, and the idea of alienating any of them, or getting off on a bad start, twisted her stomach in knots of nervous anxiety. She stood up and unpacked her few belongings. The closet looked so empty after she’d put her scant possessions into it. She began walking down the stairs and she heard their voices. Krista paused to listen, feeling a bit evil for eavesdropping.

“It’s only right that she pick.”

“We’ve all waited so long, shouldn’t we draw straws or something?”

“For God’s sake, she’s a human being, not a new toy. Let the girl have her pick. We’ll all have a chance.”

“What if we all share her tonight? Then it’s fair to all of us.”

“It wouldn’t be fair to Krista. If she was your new bride, would you want to pass her around to five other guys?”

“There’s no more marriage, so the question isn’t valid. The world isn’t nice and romantic. The fact is, she’ll have to sleep with all of us.”

“For tonight, let her have some peace. I say no one should touch her.”

“Are you fucking kidding? Hell no, she picks at least one of us and that’s final!”

“Shh, she’ll hear you.”

“It’s not like it’ll hurt her the first time, they have their cherries popped by the doctor. I say we ask. She seems understanding.”

She’d heard enough. She finished walking down the stairs, one squeaked. They all turned, giving her guilty looks.

“Yes, I heard. I was thinking about the same thing. I don’t know if I can pick. I don’t want to cause infighting here, and I don’t want anyone to feel hurt. I don’t know what to do,” she finished miserably.

“We won’t force you to do anything you don’t want to do, but you should sleep with at least one of us tonight,” Damon said.

“If you want to pick more than one, that’s okay too,” DeAnthony amended. Krista blushed.

Red always knew she would have to face the man who nearly destroyed her. She just didn’t figure it would happen so soon . . .
With the plague sweeping across the nation, destroying many and turning others into walking corpses, survivors head West in search of a chosen land, a place designed to keep the infected out, while sealing survivors inside. In theory, the idea seems the only way to keep humanity alive. In practice, it doesn’t matter whether a person is on the inside or the out—there is no humanity.
. . . And even though John Gatherum hunted her down and instigated their reunion, Red’s no longer the passive girl he once manipulated. This time, she has a hidden agenda of her own.
Kill him. Save her family. Save herself.

Survivor Round up is the 2nd book the first being Wanted: Dead or Undead, you will not follow this book very well without reading the first one.

Red and Trace are back and life in the fort is getting to the point that they need more supplies, this leads to the adventure in this book. I really enjoyed the first book, Wanted: Dead or Undead, I think the second, Survivor Roundup is even better. I feel like the characters have matured a little in this book and as in the first Ms. Scott creates an amazing dystopian world in the old west.

The characters in Survivor Roundup are funny, easy to like and full of complex emotions that we are allowed to see and be a part of. I felt that in this second book the characters are even more approachable and it was easier to dive in and be a part of the book. This is written for a young adult audience and while it touches on the physical side of love briefly nothing explicit is ever said or used.

Even if you are not a zombie fan I think you will like this book and enjoy it a great deal, I know I did.

4 out of 5 flowers.

Author info:

Angela Scott hears voices. Tiny fictional people sit on her shoulders and whisper their stories in her ear. Instead of medicating herself, she decided to pick up a pen, write down everything those voices tell me, and turn it into a book. She's not crazy. She's an author. For the most part, she writes contemporary Young Adult novels. However, through a writing exercise that spiraled out of control, she found herself writing about zombies terrorizing the Wild Wild West--and loving it. Her zombies don't sparkle, and they definitely don't cuddle. At least, she wouldn't suggest it. She lives on the benches of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains with two lovely children, one teenager, and a very patient husband. She graduated from Utah State University with a B.A. degree in English, not because of her love for the written word, but because it was the only major that didn't require math. She can't spell, and grammar is her arch nemesis. But they gave her the degree, and there are no take backs.

Trace Monroe doesn't believe in luck. He never has. But when a fiery-headed cowgirl saunters through the saloon doors, wielding shotguns and a know-how for killing the living dead, he believes he just may be the luckiest man alive.

Trace wants to join Red's posse, but she prefers to work alone--less messy that way. In order to become her traveling companion, Trace has to agree to her terms: no names, no questions, and if he gets bit, he can't beg for mercy when she severs his brain stem.

He agrees, knowing only that Red is the sharpest shooter he's ever encountered. The fact she's stunning hasn't escaped his attention either.

What he doesn't know, is that Red has a very good reason to be on top of her game. She not only has the answer for how they can all outlive the plague taking over the wild, wild west, she IS the answer.

EXCERPT:

Sunken features, decaying flesh and teeth that ground and snapped against themselves—Bill was dead all right. Sure, he walked around grunting, but that was only a technicality.

Zombie Bill lunged at the man closest to the door, ripped a chunk of flesh from the screaming man's neck, and howled as warm blood gurgled between his teeth.

"He's got it a'right!" someone yelled.

Beer bottles and whisky jugs exploded from ill-aimed bullets. Wood chips showered down from the rafters and the air filled with the metallic smell of gun smoke. Trace fired a shot or two of his own, but decided his best option was to find some sort of shelter—drunks made horrible shooters. He pushed the poker table over on its side and hunkered down behind it. It was better than nothing.

The old poker player crouched beside him. "Don't go thinking we're through just 'cause a zombie walked in here and stopped me from killing you."

Trace shook his head. "No, sir, I figured we were just having ourselves an intermission." He aimed his gun over the top of the table and watched Zombie Bill continue forward, his body riddled with bullet holes. The dead man wouldn't die.

Set in the old west WANTED: Dead or Undead is a dystopian YA novel that turns history on it's ear and has the zombie apocalypse happening when James Garfield is the president of the United States.

Red is not only a gunslinger zombie fighter she is also a woman that makes her a pretty bad a$$ heroine in my book. Red keeps herself emotionally distant from people by not learning there names and not telling people hers, the is how Cowboy (Trace) ends up calling her Red and she calling him Cowboy.

The story evolves with Red first having Cowboy joining her mostly against her will to them adding on people as they go looking for her brother and trying to find someplace safe from the zombie plague. The underlying love story that is built between Red and Cowboy is sweet and tender. With WANTED: Dead or Undead falling into the Young Adult genre it has not cussing, no sex scenes and the gore while described is not graphic or gratuitous.

Ms Scott does an excellent job with the development of her characters and building a zombie dystopian world in the old west. I have to say this by far is one of my favorite YA books of the year and can't wait to read the ones to follow.

Wastes of Space by Darcy Town

Title: Wastes of Space

In the early 21st century, the Cold War between the American and Chinese Empires slogs on in a stalemate. There's a ceasefire in effect, but the peace is artificial—secretly enforced by an alien blockade that surrounds the planet. Earth is caught in a territory struggle between two warring factions: the Empire and the Resistance. Lacking harvestable talents, both groups classify Earthlings as Wasters.

Hidden among the Wasters is an alien girl with the power of moving spaceships. She teams up with Rake, a drug-addicted ex-Astronaut, to join an intergalactic war that Earth did not know existed…but first Rake has to realize he's travelling with an alien to begin with.

Photobucket

Wastes of Space is a dystopian, sci-fi novel with a most unusual romance thrown in the mix to to make it one of the most unique books I have read to date.

Rake, a former american space pilot, became a junkie and male prostitute after losing his twin and his girl friend. Rake was planning on using the drugs to kill himself but instead uses them to forget long enough to go on living.

Ravil is a sub-species know as navigators named after the gift they posess. After being kidnapped from a breeding facility by the resistance and having to crash land on Earth in an effort to escape the Empire her guardians are killed and she is left in the care of Rake.

Darcy Town takes on the sci-fi establishment with a twist of her own and makes a male dominated genre more female friendly by added a dash of romance. Wastes of Space is a well rounded story that has aliens, battling empires and a bonded hero and heroine.

While not generally a fan of dystopian plot lines, Wastes of Space had me reeled in from the beginning and gripped in the story of Ravil and Rake keeping me up until I finished it. I thoroughly enjoyed the secondary characters as well and look forward to reading book 2 Wastes Away and Book 3 Waste Not Want Not.

I give Wastes of Space 4 out of 5 flowers and I am giving a heat level of 2 while there are plenty of adult themes and moments they are not graphic or descriptive.

Excerpt:
A howl from outside the building woke Ravil up. Her eyes shot open as goose bumps raced across her skin. She reached for Rake, but her hands slipped through air. Another howl came louder than the last, followed by a faint scream. She stared at her empty outstretched hand as the realization set in—he’d abandoned her.
Ravil slipped out of the tub, kept low to the floor, and held her knife out in front of her. She reached the hall and crawled towards the windows. Weak sunlight filtered into the apartment through the grimy glass. Every fiber of her being told her to go back and hide in the darkness of the bathroom, but she would not wait for death to come to her. Rake had left her; he’d lied last night. She held back tears and moved another few inches. She was on her own now and she would handle it.
The hall creaked. Ravil froze.
Rake kneeled by her side and whispered into her ear, “Not a sound now, Bebette.” He held one of her Bowie knives and crawled past her, keeping his head below the level of the windows. He crept towards the closest and used a piece of mirror to look outside. His shift in expression made Ravil scoot back into the bathroom. She climbed into the tub and covered her ears.
The howls and screams continued until they cut off in a definitive silence. Rake came in some minutes later, his face ashen. He sat down and looked over at her. “We cannot walk out on the streets.”
“Wh…why?”
“We just can’t.” Rake’s hands shook. He grabbed his left hand with his right and pressed it into the floor; he broke into a sweat. He took a deep breath. “It’s not safe.”
“Can’t we run?”
He shook his head. “Do you want to end up a screamer?”

About the Author:
I earned a degree in Comparative Religion, so themes-wise that certainly pops up here and there in my writing (okay, more than a little here and there in some books).

I write what I enjoy reading/watching - which is fantasy/sci-fi with dark humor and a bit of romance. What I consider romance however is to some...a bit off (and kinked out). And when I say dark humor I mean black. But I always have lighthearted moments (I do not believe a story should be all one way or another). Gotta spice things up!

Speaking of...I like to write stories that cater to all sexual preferences in one story (as opposed to just writing gay/lesbian lit, etc). I have your typical male-female romances. I have male-male, female-female, transgender, bi-sexual, sub-dom, etc. This is mostly due to the fact that well...1. I like writing about it. 2. I see it in my everyday life. 3. I like having a well-rounded cast of characters from all walks of life.

I am the author of the Morningstar Trilogy and the Wastes Series.
