Burning Up the Rain (Hawaiian Heroes #4) by Cathryn Cade

Her powers could save her island…or bring their love crashing down.

Hawaiian Heroes, Book 4

Despite her successful career, Lalei Kai-Ho’omalu has always considered herself mere decoration in a dynamic Hawaiian family, with none of their powerful gifts. Destined for life in the background as a useless, upper-crust wife.

Desperate to escape her mother’s latest matchmaking attempt, Lalei acts on her sizzling attraction to a guest at her cousin’s island wedding, making him a bold offer he can’t refuse.

A no-strings, no-holds-barred affair on Nawea Bay with the sexy Hawaiian beauty is just the break California Realtor Jack Nord needs from his fast-paced career—and an inner darkness he’d like to forget. Just for a while.

Their very public liaison is the shocking declaration of independence Lalei intended—with unintended consequences. Stirred to anger by developers set on carving her family’s unspoiled ancestral lands into a resort, Lalei discovers she has the supernatural power to stop them.

But when Jack learns his lover can bring down the rain and throw bolts of lightning, whose side will he take? The money-making machine? Or the woman born to protect her island home?

Warning: A wahine whose real estate may be too hot to handle, and a Realtor who’s determined to seal the deal.

Burning Up the Rain is book #4 in the Hawaiian Heroes series and while the story is complete on it's own it has much better context when read as part of the series.

Lalei Kai-Ho’omalu one of the Ho'omalu cousins is a successful business woman taking care of the art gallery owned by her family that sell a lot of her cousins work. He family life is not such a success her mother who finds status more important than economy refuses to change her lifestyle after the death of Lalei's father and now she is in financial trouble. Mom has a plan to keep her status and solve her money issues, she just needs Lalei to agree to marry the man she has picked out, to bad Lalei can't stand him.

Jack Nord played football with David and Daniel Ho'omalu(Lalei's cousins), He has come to Hawaii for Daniel's wedding. He has met Lalei in passing at other family events but it isn't until they are together at the wedding that things start to heat up. Jack has always thought Lalei was rather prissy so when she puts the moves on him it is rather a surprise.

Through the series the bad guys have been part of a drug cartel family and now it is a company that is funded by the drug money that is the problem. Lalei finds that she too has gifts from Pele when trouble starts.

This is a fun twist on mythology and the paranormal by using Hawaiian legends as the basis for the supernatural powers in this family. The story is extremely well crafted and has some pretty tense and suspenseful moments. The love scenes as hot as the lava coming up from Kilauea. This book is great but is my least favorite of the series, the paranormal element in this one just seemed to take a HUGE backseat in this story and it wasn't as integrated into the story as in the others. That being the case I still loved this book and would recommend the entire series.
