Growing up without a mother, Melissa has always felt different. Now in her 30s, and plodding along in her failing relationship with Tom, she begins dreaming of Kellen; confident, strong, everything her heart desires. But though these dreams feel more real than reality, Melissa knows it’s fantasy–Kellen’s tribe live in the forest, and he doesn’t call her by her real name, but another: Nyssa.

When Kellen steps out of her dreams and into her life, she feels that her wishes have come true–especially when he reveals he knows about her mother. Kellen has always known about Nyssa. Like her mother, Kellen is one of the Fae, the man Nyssa would have been joined with had her mother not run off to the mortal realm with a human lover. With strife brewing in the Faery Realm, Kellen visits Nyssa in her dreams, knowing her return will prevent tragedy.

Convincing her she has faery blood turns out to be easier than Kellen imagined, especially when Nyssa remembers those awful conversations with her father, about a mother who was ‘different’. But Kellen fails to tell her everything, risking not only their growing relationship, but the peace of all the Faery Folk.

Excerpt:
“Do you think you could drive?” Tom asked when they got back to the car. “I’m exhausted.” Without waiting for an answer he climbed into the passenger side, tilted the seat back, and closed his eyes.

Perhaps I’m being foolish, Melissa thought, watching him. Maybe I should be happy with what I’ve got, and not expect a fairy tale. She felt a twinge of sorrow about the situation. But his day had worn her out. This time away was supposed to be their chance to reconnect. He had begged her for it, the chance to reignite their relationship. But all he’d managed to do was show Melissa he did not want to face their issues any more than she did.

They arrived back at the campsite at dusk, Tom feigning sleep the whole way, Melissa exhausted.

“Who’s that?” Melissa noticed the car first, and just behind it, another tent set up opposite their own.

As they got out of the car, a young woman emerged from the tent, a bright smile on her face.

“Hi,” she said. “I guess this is your campsite?”

“Uh, yeah,” Tom answered.

“Sorry to barge in on you, but we couldn’t find anywhere else to camp, and your tent looked lonely.” She laughed. Tom and Melissa managed a weak smile.

“I’m Nerida by the way.” She held out her hand and in the glow from the fire Melissa thought the other woman looked familiar.

“Melissa,” she shook Nerida’s hand. “And this is Tom.”

Nerida turned back to the fire. “We’ve got some left over fish if you’d like some? Cooked up too much.”

“Thanks, we’ve eaten,” Tom replied.

A movement in Nerida’s tent caused Melissa and Tom to turn as one.

Melissa gasped, heart pounding as a familiar figure emerged from the tent, a figure she had seen so often in her dreams. She felt the spark between them the moment his eyes met hers.

“This is my brother Kellen.” Nerida said over her shoulder, apparently unaware of the chemistry. Melissa fought to keep from fainting.

Tom stepped forward and put out his hand to shake Kellen’s.

“Tom,” he said. He took a step back and placed the same arm protectively around Melissa. “And this is my partner…”

“Nyssa, right?” Kellen smiled and Melissa felt her knees go weak. “I heard from inside.” The desire on his face was clear as his eyes wandered the length of her body.

“Actually it’s MEL-issa.” Tom frowned.

“We were surprised to find anyone else here,” Kellen said, shooting Tom a winning smile before returning his gaze to Melissa. “They say this is a weak spot, one of the points where the fair folk have a doorway – giving them access to this world, and of course us access to theirs.” Melissa turned her attention back to the fire, forcing them to break eye contact, though she couldn’t help but sneak glances as he spoke. She felt her face flush with the heat of his attention, his gaze a tangible weight on her skin. Tom must’ve noticed, moving her to the opposite side of the flames.

“So you’re saying that we shouldn’t camp here, because the fairies might come through?” he said with a scoff.

“No,” Kellen said, finally taking his eyes from Melissa to look at Tom. “I am saying it’s what the locals say. No one said not to camp here; they said they wouldn’t recommend it.” He stopped and glanced at Nerida, laughing. “But when we saw your tent we thought we’d stop anyway, safety in numbers, hey.” He finished the sentence with a smirk on his face, and Melissa wasn’t sure if he was joking or serious. She closed her eyes. Just because he is identical to the man from my dreams doesn’t mean he is that same man, and even if he is, I am with Tom. But for how long? The voice came unbidden but she could not ignore it. She glanced at Tom and he turned as though he felt her gaze, and smiled. He was a good man. He told her often he loved her, and didn’t seem bothered she rarely replied in kind. The guilt tore at her. How could she end things and hurt him? Maybe passion was a fantasy out of romance stories, and she was thinking of throwing away a good relationship based on the desire for something which may only exist in her dreams. But he’s here, he’s real! Once again she felt Kellen’s gaze, the warmth of it bringing her body to life. She glanced back at him and a thrill travelled her spine and she shivered.

Eros, My Love by April Bostic

Gabrielle Foster never thought she would fall in love with a mythological character. After reading the pages of a mysterious journal, she finds herself enamored, yet sympathetic, toward Eros, the Greek god of love. The journal paints him as a tragic and lonely god with a selfless heart that aches for companionship. But the author is a clinically insane woman, so Eros couldn't really exist in the modern world...could he?

While working the night shift at a local diner in downtown Boston, a secret admirer of ethereal beauty reveals his true identity, and Gabrielle discovers her love is not unrequited.

 photo Review.jpg

Eros, My Love is a short story or a short novella at around 25 pages, not a lot of chance for character development or plot however the detail and imagery are very well done.

As Gabrielle faces a cold and miserable day wintering in Boston she dreams of tropical beaches and a hot man, Eros Greek god of love has had his year on earth and now must return home.

The setup for this story is rich in detail and feels like it could be the beginning of a much longer story, we have a pretty steamy sex scene and that is most of the story. So it was a nice quickie it seemed to me it could have been so much more. I would love to see the author take this premise and expand on it to make a longer novella or even a full length novel.

 photo Review.jpg

Trouble In Thigh High Boots takes the fairy tale of Puss in Boots and gives it a naughty erotic flair. Elizabeth Black recreates her version of the popular fairy tale with a female cat shifter who is looking to return to her true love.

Tita is a cute character and has the traits and morals of a cat while being able to shift into a beautiful woman as well. The story is fairly faithful to the fairy tale with the addition of a lot of steaming hot sex in several varieties including a couple of menage scenes.

This is a novella length book so it is perfect for when you only have an hour or so for yourself to read, and Elizabeth Black gives you something hot and fun to read.

 photo Review.jpg

In Dark Waters, a novella length paranormal/fantasy romance we are introduced to Liia Ann White's world of the Fae, Adora the only child of the King of the Seelie fae is less than happy with her life as a princess so she works hard with the army as a healer. Randor is the best assassin the Unseelie fae have and has been granted a boon to live in the human realm and not fight with the army as long as he continues to take special assignments, the latest kidnap Princess Adora and bring her to the Unseeelie Queen.

I love a good kick butt heroine and Adora is one, she trains like a warrior and isn't afraid to stand up for herself. Randor has to grow on you a bit more but overall is a good hero for the story. Because this is a novella length book you want to go into it with a passing idea of the whole fae Seelie/Unseelie concept. Fae having soulmates was something I believe is a part of Ms. White's world and not part of the mythology of the fae, however it is a fun twist and works well in this story.

We do have a good share of steamy scenes and even a small battle to give some action to the story, this is the begining of a series and I will be on the look out for the books that follow to continue what will happen in the Water Lands.

Excerpt:

As the most successful faery assassin in the realm, Randor wasn’t surprised when the Unseelie queen ordered him to kidnap a member of the Seelie royal family. The two kingdoms had been at war for over ten decades. It began because of a simple territory dispute. Now, each just wanted to one up the other.

He left the Unseelie army to stay out of the fight he deemed “ridiculous and unnecessary.” Unfortunately he was labelled as a traitor after that. He struck a deal with the late Unseelie king to leave the faery realm so he could lead an anonymous life. The one condition was that he work as an assassin. After all, he’d been the most successful officer in the Unseelie army, rising to the highest ranks before his fortieth year, a feat that took most eighty-plus years to accomplish.

Very little surprised him anymore. He’d always thought he was immune to the emotion—until he saw his target.

Princess Adora. She was officially the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen. Long, wavy blonde hair touched the small of her back and was highlighted with every imaginable colour. Her tall, curvy body was covered in a tight top, pants, and boots. She dressed like a warrior rather than royalty. For the first time in his life, he hesitated to approach a target. In two silent steps, he stood behind her, alert and ready. The moment he called for the air, the ability he used to knock out his victims, a wave of power washed over him. With wide eyes, he regarded the princess and reached for his sword.

ARC Review: By the Light of the Moon (Lakeside #1) by Laila Blake

Withdrawn and with a reputation for her strange, eccentric ways, young Lady Moira Rochmond is old to be unwed. Rumors say, she has been seen barefoot in the orchard, is awake all night in moon-struck rambles and sleeps all day. Some will even claim her ghostly pallor and aloof manner are signs of illness, of a curse or insanity.

The hopes of the peaceful succession to her father’s fief lie in an advantageous marriage. Moira, however, has a hard time attracting suitors. When one does show interest, her family pushes for a decision.
Almost resigned to the fact that she has no choice but to play the part she has been given in life, Moira is faced with Owain. A member of the mysterious Blaidyn creatures and a new guard in her father’s castle, specifically tasked to keep her safe. He is different from other people she knows and when one night under the full moon, she makes the acquaintance of the wolf who shares Owain’s soul, she starts to trust him and seek his presence. As he becomes one of the few individuals who doesn’t make her want to hide and retreat, she wants to learn more about him and they grow closer until they share a kiss one night under the moon.

Faced with feelings and desires that overthrow everything she thought she knew about herself, Moira knows non-the-less that they have to be kept utterly secret. However much they try, however, they continue to be drawn to each other until one night, Owain discovers something about Moira that shakes him to core.

 photo Review.jpg

Laila Blake takes fantasy and mixes it with her version of the paranormal, with fae, witches, blaidyn (think wolf shifter)set in an older period in time the world in By the Light of the Moon is one unlike any I have ever read before.

By the Light of the Moon has an interesting storyline and characters that are quirky and unusual. Ms. Blake builds a world with magic and mystery with our heroine having odd behaviours ahd questionable parentage and our hero is an older character who is a breed I think was created by Ms. Blake.

When I first started to read By the Light of the Moon I had a hard time following exactly who everyone was and what role they were to play, I felt that perhaps a bit of backstory or character introduction could have helped this. Through many plot twists and turns as well as more than one "bad guy" we do have an unique love story that over all was a good read.

 photo Review.jpg

Take an epic fantasy novel mix it well with an erotic romance throw in a handful of comic relief in the form of gnomes and you will have Tempted By The Storm by Maxine Mansfield. We have elf wizards for our hero in Sarco Sunwalker and we have a powerful emphatic heroine Larksong who is also one of the few of a near extinct line of spiritmasters who among other talents controls the weather with her moods.

This is chock full, from nearly the first page, of sex and sexual situations earning the title erotic romance, in the fantasy camp we have elves, barbarians, dark elves, wizards, dragons and don't forget the gnomes who also provide 3/4 of the comic relief involved in the story. Tempted By The Storm is a light epic fantasy that has as many giggles as it does sighs from the sex and wonder at the fantastic creatures and characters.

This was an enjoyable read and at nearly 400 pages a book you will be able to pick up and enjoy for several days. The story is easy enough to follow that you wont get lost along the way and even with the plethora of fantasy creatures you are never confused or feel like you need a translator to understand who is who (like you do in some fantasy books). Last but certainly never least are the gnomes, they are disgusting, loyal, extremely sexual, ugly and have some of the best one liners in the book.

EXCERPT:

There was only one word that could describe the creature standing before him. Wonderful.

“Did you say something?” the woman whispered.

He shook his head. “Nothing, I just can’t believe my luck. You really are real and here with me.”

She smiled, but her smile didn’t extend to her eyes.

Before another heartbeat passed or another breath taken, he stood at her side. With tenderness, he gazed into her gentle, masked face and took both of her hands in his. He was humbled as her fingers trembled even more than his own did. “We don’t have to do this if you’d rather not.”

She smiled wider, and her eyes gleamed with mischief. “I suppose we might as well. After all, we’re already here, and you’re at least halfway undressed.”

Sliding his hands up her arms and around her shoulders to her back, Sarco felt for and found the clasps holding her gown together. With the flick of a wrist, they gave way, and with a swish, the silky fabric fell to her hips exposing lush, rose-tipped breasts. Just the right size to hold in both hands, to fondle, to caress, to taste.

“Hmm, it seems you’re halfway undressed yourself.”
