Mail Order Mayhem (Brides of Beckham #1) by Kirsten Osbourne

When Maude is told she must marry a repulsive man, she instead responds to an Iowa farmer who is looking for a mail order bride. After sneaking out of town on a train, she goes to Iowa and marries. She quickly falls for the wonderful man she marries, but does he feel the same? And will she be able to escape her past?

 photo Review.jpg

Mail Order Mayhem is the first in the Brides of Beckham series, this first book is more novella in length at around 100 pages and introduces us not only to the heroine (the mail order bride) Maude and the hero John but most importantly to Harrett Long the mysterious woman who runs the mail order bride service. Harrett is the constant in the series the rest of the books each are about new couples.

When Maude is to be married off to a man she can't stand and is twice her age she is despondent when she runs into Harrett at the post office it is like a sign or a gift that she has been given and quickly agrees to be a mail order bride for a farmer who needs a wife in Iowa.

When John's sister in law insists it is time he take a wife and should send for one through Harrett's mail order bride agency he is extremely pleased when he meets the beautiful Maude at the train.

This is a quick book that has a little heat, a couple of plot twists and some old fashion falling in love. At times the story is a lot like the inspirational romance novels but at the same time it does have some sexual content. I enjoyed the story enough that I have continued reading the series and each one though based on the idea of mail order brides is different and enjoyable in its own way.

ThunderStruck by Kendall Grace A NetGalley Review

Desperate to distance herself from her previous life, and her high-powered ex, Jo Montgomery moves to a tiny slice of Georgia, an impetuous decision if there ever was one. Though not nearly as impetuous as throwing herself into an intimate relationship with her new neighbor. Hawk Stephens, a horse breeder and local celebrity, is sex personified, a man built for dark deeds in dark places. But he wants far more from Jo.

Every instinct tells Silent Hawk that Jo is The One, and despite her obvious uncertainty, his Apache beliefs give him faith. The signs are unmistakable. His skittish little filly requires a strong hand, patience…and blazing, mind-bending sex that leaves no doubt to his feelings and intentions.

But before their love affair has barely begun, the reemergence of Jo’s ex, coupled with a potentially tragic event, forces Jo to make decisions that not only damage Hawk’s beliefs, but could also shatter their tender romance beyond repair.

 photo Review.jpg

After her marriage of 12 years falls apart Jo moves as far away from her ex as she can to heal. She ends up in Vidalia, GA in a house that needs major repairs and with a neighbor who is too hot for her own good.

Hawk is half Apache and he knows that he will be meeting the women he is to spend his life with, when he meets Jo he knows it is her. The signs and omens back up his belief now if he can just convince Jo to give them a chance.

The love story between Jo and Hawk builds and seems to follow a pretty natural progression and includes plenty of wild romps. The sexual tension is really built between Ray and Raven, Hawks divorced parents. The back story behind Jo's flight to Georgia is a bit weak and it seemed like there we several openings and opportunities to introduce more of why the ex is such a bad guy that were missed.

This is a lovely love story with some steam to it without being on the more extreme end of erotic. We are treated to sexy Apache cowboys and that is always a good thing. I could see a series developing around this small Georgia town so I will be keeping and eye out for more works by Ms. Grace in the future.

About the Author:
Kendall Grace has been writing all her life, starting with a wildly successful Teddy Bear series in second grade, which received stellar reviews (and her mother is always right). Her teenage years brought about some truly dreadful, teenage-angst poetry that she still pulls out from time to time and sends little prayers heavenward that her daughter doesn’t torture her as much as Kendall tortured her own mother.

Her adult years were peppered with oddly chosen professions. She worked in the accounting field (snooze fest), as a safe-sex counselor with Planned Parenthood for incoming college freshman (don’t ask), and as a personal trainer and lifestyle and weight-management consultant.

After becoming a stay-at-home mother, her true passion came to the surface and she began to write. She’s delighted every day when she can yell to her husband that she’s working, close the office door on the chaos that is a family of four and become lost in her stories. Receiving the news that Ellora’s Cave deemed her writing worthy of publication is a day she will always remember.

 photo GuestPost.jpg
Thank you to Cynthia Woolf for taking the time to write a guest post for us about her research into mail order brides.

My research into mail order brides

My research was limited to what I could find in books. I was unable to find much on the internet about mail order brides from yesteryear. There was plenty of information on Russian brides if I was looking for one. 
The book of choice for me was HEARTS WEST, True Stories of Mail Order Brides on the Frontier by Chris Enss. There are more than a dozen stories of real mail order brides. Each one is different. Each experience unique.
One of the most interesting to me was the story of Eleanor Berry. On the way to meet her groom and get married, her stage was robbed and then blown up. Before the stage was blown up, she begged one of the bandits to take her luggage off the stage as it contained her trousseau. He obliged. As he was taking down her trunk she noticed a long, jagged scar on his hand.
Eventually, she made it to town and met her groom, a Mr. Louis Dreibelbis. They were quickly married by the local reverend, who also acted as Eleanor’s guardian. After the ceremony they went to sign the marriage certificate. As they did, Eleanor noticed the scar on Louis’ hand. It was the same long, jagged scar as the bandit had that had robbed them.
Upon discovery Louis escaped and took off for parts unknown. Eleanor, so despondent over her marriage, tried to take her own life. She was saved by the reverend and his wife. Though it is not known what happened to Eleanor, I like to believe that she eventually got her own happily ever after.
Another book is called Object Matrimony: The Risky Business of Mail Order Matchmaking on the Western Frontier by Chris Enss. This book chronicles the very real dangers that mail order brides undertook in accepting the proposals of marriage. Everything from getting married to a drunk or wife beater to being sold into prostitution. It wasn’t a safe or guaranteed proposition by any means.
That’s what gave me the idea for Matchmaker & Co. This was a company that vetted its applicants. Checked them out to make sure they were real and were upstanding men. They also check out the brides and make sure the men, who were the actual clients, are getting a good woman, of good character. No drug users or prostitutes need apply.
My matchmaker, Maggie Selby, does her best to actually match the brides and grooms based on what her investigators discover and what the applicants say in their letters. She does a very good job of it and has a 100% success rate.
Nathan Ravenclaw proves to be a challenge to find the right bride for. He is half Arapaho Indian and most white women will not consider marrying him for that reason. It has left him scarred inside and somewhat bitter.
Ella Davenport has survived a horrific carriage accident that left her father dead and her beautiful face scarred. She applied to be a bride, because she would rather marry a stranger, aware of her scars but accepting of them than to have someone marry her out of pity or for her money.
Maggie believes that these two young people are the perfect pair and will be able to help each other heal as well as find their happiness together.

Excerpt:

She arrived in Denver on April 6, 1868. A date she would forever remember as the start of her life. It was almost like another birthday.
The weather was cold with the wind off the plains toward the mountains. The buildings weren’t as tall as in New York, but the wind still whistled between them and over the platform where she stood. She was glad of her good wool coat and lined boots. They kept her warm while she waited for Mr. Ravenclaw to find her. There wasn’t anyone else wearing a veil so she didn’t think he’d have much problem identifying her.
She wasn’t really sure what she expected, but it wasn’t the tall, devastatingly handsome man that approached her. He had a square jaw shaved clean and a tiny dimple in his chin. Black eyebrows slashed over his eyes, the color of which was hidden by the shadow from his hat, pulled low on his head. For once she was glad of her veil. He wouldn’t be able to see her mouth hanging open, gawking at him.
“Miss Davenport?”
“Yes. Are you Mr. Ravenclaw?”
“I am.”
She held out her hand. “Ella Davenport.”
He removed his glove and enveloped her hand in his big one. His fingers brushed the skin of her wrist just above her glove. The tingle that traveled clear to her toes was unexpected and her gaze snapped up to his. She looked up into the most beautiful blue eyes. They seemed to question what was happening between them as much as she did.
He held her hand for what seemed like a lifetime and they simply starred at each other.
“Miss Davenport….”
“Ella. Please.”
“Ella. I would like for you to lift your veil.”
“Are you sure you want to do this in public. It can be…shocking.”
“I’m sure.” He squeezed her hand and then let go.
“Very well.” She lifted the heavy lace, prepared for him to be taken aback by the ugliness of it. She wasn’t prepared for him to lift his hand and gently trace the scar all the way from her left eye over her cheek and down her neck to the top of her collar.
There was no disdain on his face. His blue eyes took in everything and accepted it, but even so he said the last thing she expected.
“You are a very beautiful woman.”
She stood there with her mouth open until he raised her chin with his knuckle.
“Why are you surprised? Surely you have heard the compliment before.”
She shook her head to clear it and find her tongue. “Not since the accident, except from my brother. But he’s biased. He loves me.”
“He but states the obvious. Your scars do not detract from your beauty.”
“I must thank you because good manners dictate it. However, I believe we should see about getting you some glasses.”
He laughed. A rich, deep baritone. “I’m glad you have a sense of humor.”
She stared back at him, incredulous, “Who was joking?”

About The Author:

Cynthia Woolf was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.
Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.
Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.
She worked her way through college and went to work full time straight after graduation and there was little time to write. Then in 1990 she and two friends started a round robin writing a story about pirates. She found that she missed the writing and kept on with other stories. In 1992 she joined Colorado Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America. Unfortunately, the loss of her job demanded she not renew her memberships and her writing stagnated for many years.
In 2001, she saw an ad in the paper for a writers conference being put on by CRW and decided she'd attend. One of her favorite authors, Catherine Coulter, was the keynote speaker. Cynthia was lucky enough to have a seat at Ms. Coulter's table at the luncheon and after talking with her, decided she needed to get back to her writing. She rejoined both CRW and RWA that day and hasn't looked back.
Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

Author Interview: Buck Naked by Desiree Holt

Sometimes out of the frying pan and into the fire is the best way to burn.

Naked Cowboys, Book 2

Amy Stark has it all together—except for chronic bad taste in men. She’s firmly in hands-off-all-men mode when a flat tire forces her to accept the help of exactly the type of man she’s sworn off. Arrogant, cocky and condescending.

When she runs into him again later that day and then finds out her brother has invited him for dinner, the fire between them has a sizzle of a different kind.

At eighteen, Buck Montgomery left home to make his mark on the bull-riding circuit. He may have had wild success in rodeo but his personal life is in the dust, and while he’s ready to start a new life he’s wary to expose his heart. Buck knows he should tell Amy the truth, but every time he opens his mouth, hers is right there with kisses like molten lava.

When his past resurfaces at the worst possible time, Buck can only wonder if Amy will love the man he has become…or if the man he was will chase her away.

Product Warnings: Contains barnyard language and clap-your-hands-over-your-mama’s-eyes sex between a cowboy with a checkered past and a ranch girl with all the right move

 photo AuthorInterview.jpg

I can't tell how excited I am to have one of the greatest erotic romance writers of all time as a guest on My Reading Obsession, Desiree Holt is an amazing author and I was thrilled to be able to ask her a few questions.

MRO: You have been writing erotic romance for a while, how has it changed from the time you started?

Desiree: For one thing, there is a greater acceptance of it. More people are actually talking about it. More reviewers will review it. More people are willing to give it a try and find they actually enjoy it. For another, the demand for quality is even stronger. You can get away with a lot of things if you have a well-written strong story and characters the readers can connect with. And finally, there is a greater acceptance of graphic language.

MRO: You are a mother and a grandmother what does your family say when asked about your work?

Desiree: They tell people they are really proud of me and they do everything to promote me but they don’t read anything I write. Sex and mom or sex and grandma? Uh uh. Not a visual they want to deal with. But they do tell people how proud of me they are and hand out my business cards. And when people ask them if what I write embarrasses them? They say they arte proud I’m succeeding in a market that has finally gained respectability.

MRO: Do you have a favorite book or series, yours or one you read?

Desiree: I have a couple of favorite books of mine: Rodeo Heat, Once Upon a Wedding , Joy Ride and Stark Naked. I loved he characters and their stories. Favorite series by other authors? Oh yeah. Number One is Joey Hill’s Nature of Desire. After that? Totally opposite-any series by Robyn Carr and Sheryl Woods, and the thriller series by Vince Flynn and Brad Thor.

MRO: Is there a line you wont cross (a taboo) when it comes to the sex in your books?

Desiree: Actually I think I’ve crossed about every line that appeals to me! LOL! Although the more I write BDSM the more extreme I find myself writing about it.

MRO: Where do you see your writing career in 5, 10 years?

Desiree: Hopefully, still doing what I do, turning out stories I love, and hoping to one day hot the NYT Best seller List!

Thanks again for taking the time with us here today Desiree :O)

 photo Review.jpg

Tempted by Trouble is fast paced contemporary romance taking place in Texas with a smokin' hot rancher, Matt, as the hero and a feisty if not a little vulnerable Cubian American heroine, Carolina.

The sexy scenes start from the beginning of the book and it is chock full of them. Matt and Carolina have no problem in the sex department, that is sizzling. The communications department is a whole other story. When Matt hires Carolina, a large animal vet, to find out what is killing the cattle on his ranch he never suspected she would be a petite curvy Latina with a quick temper and a connection to him that he can't deny.

I thought this was a good story and had a bit of a mystery element to it with the cattle dying of unknown causes,
it was fast paced and a good length, Matt seemed to be a good guy if not very good at communicating his feelings, Carolina seemed to be a bit immature in her reactions to Matt and the whole relationship issue. I did find that at times some rather cheesy references were made to part of the anatomy (my favorite was was hot love vice) but over all an enjoyable book.

Excerpt:

Turning on her heel, Pearl marched off toward the stairs.

A weird kind of panic jolted through Ethan, one he’d never felt before in all his days. It was…he didn’t…. She couldn’t leave him. “Where are you going?”

She whirled to face him, her irritation plain. “I was seeking my bed before your arrival, and now I’m seeking it again. Help yourself to whiskey this one time. I got better things to do.”

Shoving to his feet, he strode to her. “Don’t just walk away when we’re discussing things.”

“We ain’t discussing nothing. You’ll be down here, waiting out the blizzard. I’ll be in my bed, doing what I was gonna before you arrived. That’s the end of it.”

Taking a step, she made to leave him. Again.

He grabbed her arm. “Don’t leave me.”

“Don’t tell me what to do.” Glaring at him, she stood before the bar, her magnificent hair slipping from its pins, her breasts rising and falling.

Abruptly, his mouth went dry. Clearing his throat some, he said, “You’re supposed to offer succor to those in need.”

“We’re closed, remember?” Paint-less lips pressed tight together, she glared up at him.

They were so close he could see the faint marks of freckles on her skin.

Pearl La Monte had freckles.

A kind of haze came over him, tightening his skin and bringing with it something all-fired powerful and completely unstoppable. All the years he’d known her crashed through him, all the times she’d flirted with him and meant something else, all the times he’d seen her perform on stage and wished he could have held such fire.

Grabbing her upper arms, he hauled her against him and, ignoring her shocked gasp, he covered her mouth with his.

Velocity while book 4 in the Buckin' Bull Riders series is a stand alone novel and can be read as such.

Paolo D’Allesandro followed his brother, Marco, from Italy after a family argument led him to come to the US and become a bull rider. Paolo has never been as good as Marco but he has always felt that it was important to stay together as a family.

Savannah Harringtion is no buckle bunny she is a grad student working towards her degree in Neuroscience by interviewing bull riders. It was never in her schedule to fall in love but the she met the sexy Italian bull rider that messed with all her best laid plans.

Cassandra Carr gives us a great story that last a bit longer than 8 seconds but is nearly as exciting. I loved the way Ms. Carr was able to work in Paolo talking dirty in Italian and the way that Savannah doesn't jump right into sex with Paolo he has to take a little time with her. We are treated to a truly wonderful story about a man finding himself and finding the self confidence he needs to go after what he really wants in this life. I love that Marco and Paolo are so devoted to each other and the secondary characters of the other bull riders give us fascinating insight into some of the personalities of the men who ride wild animals for fun and profit.

Excerpt:
Tearing her mouth from his, she said, “Take me inside.”

“Are you sure?”

Climbing off him, she held out her hand, as much to feel him as to keep herself steady. “I know you need to meet Marco, but I want to do this. At least a little bit. Maybe not, you know, all the way.”

He rubbed his hands down his thighs, and then nodded. “I want that too. I will text Marco and be in soon.”

She stopped halfway to the door. “You’re not going to tell him why you’re delayed, are you?”

“I do not kiss and tell, cara.”

“Okay.” Savannah gave him what she hoped was a sultry smile. “Don’t be long.”

He wasn’t. Within moments he was following her inside. Not that she had a ton of experience, but she never knew how to lie on a bed waiting for someone and still look sexy. She settled for lying on her side with her head propped up on her hand. Apparently he appreciated the view, because he growled and slid sinuously on top, rolling her onto her back before kissing her again.

Savannah’s nails scratched down his back as he settled between her thighs, pushing his erection against her rapidly heating pussy. His hand slipped underneath her light cotton t-shirt and stroked her over her bra. Her breasts swelled in anticipation and she arched into him, hardly able to believe she needed this man so much. She didn’t even know him. Instinct told her if she knew him intimately her need would ratchet up even more.

Leaning up, Paolo stripped off his t-shirt, revealing a torso without an ounce of fat and one of her favorite parts of any man—the treasure trail. She licked her lips and heard Paolo’s breath catch. Man, his jeans looked awfully tight.
